In the field of prosthodontics, a cosmetic dentist is known as a prosthodontist. Prosthodontists are trained to perform the function of a normal dentist but they do not need to acquire formal degree in dentistry to practice as one. The prosthodontist is a dentist who is also trained in aesthetic dental procedures. They are trained to provide treatment to patients with severe forms of dental diseases like anodontia, jagged teeth and even congenital problems of the jawbones. Some of the procedures that the prosthodontist provides include dental implants, ceramic bridges, crowns and teeth veneers etc.
As mentioned above, a cosmetic dentist is referred to as either a prosthodontist or a cosmetic dentist depending upon the specific treatments which he or she provides. Cosmetic dentists can be broadly classified into two categories – those who are specifically dedicated to treating only patients with cosmetic problems and those who provide general dental treatments. In case of the first category, the dentist usually gives alternative forms of treatments other than tooth-colored fillings and veneers to the patients. These treatments include tooth-whitening treatments, tooth-colored fillings, bonding, crowns etc.
